Situations that might trigger a lockdown (real or perceived) should be immediately reported to the Principal (or DP), who will assess the situation and trigger the lockdown procedures. Immediately following this, the Police may be called, this decision rests with the Principal or DP.
The following ‘alarms’ will inform teachers of a lockdown:
1. The bell will be rung continuously in an intermittent fashion i.e., ON OFF ON OFF
2. A notification will be sent through SchoolBridge.
3. An email will be sent to all staff.
Once a lockdown is signaled teachers are to:
1. Return to their classroom or nearest secure room.
2. Lock external doors. Do not open the door under any circumstances or let anyone out of the classroom until the all clear is given. Pull curtains if you have them or blinds. Students to sit on the floor, not draw attention to themselves and stay of mobile phones.
3. Classes on the oval should be moved to the nearest free indoor space – Pavilion, Hall, Gym – and lock doors and move away from windows or spaces where you can be seen.
4. The Police will be notified.
5. Teachers and Support staff are not to leave their room.
6. Teachers must not make contact with parents, others outside the school, or the media.
7. Log in to SchoolBridge and update your status with your safety status, location, number of students, staff and other people under your care. Add any other pertinent information. Updates on the Lockdown will be sent through SchoolBridge.
8. Teachers are to keep students in the classroom (or venue around the school) until they are asked to release them by a member of the senior management team (either in person or vis SchoolBridge) or the Police.
9. Support staff will stay within their space, supporting teacher and students.
10. Ancillary staff will remain in their areas, locking doors, closing blinds and following the direction the Principal or DP.
Should a lockdown be necessary at lunchtime, all teachers/Staff will immediately return to their classrooms to receive students. Teachers and staff without classroom responsibilities will direct students to their nearest ‘safe room’ and contact the office.
Once all students and staff are safe and on the advice of the Police the school will inform parents of the Lockdown via the school app and facebook and endeavor to keep them updated after that on a half hour basis. We will use the same approach to announce the lifting of Lockdown.
